I just realized that it has been over a year since I last posted. Apologizes all around, although I'm sure no one really reads this.

I know I had an Italian post in the making, but my attention lately wanders dramatically, especially since there's nothing to keep it tied down for any extended period of time due to me being out of school and unemployed. It seems as though every day it's some new path of knowledge that I'm following, although it should be noted that all paths are connected (such is the old saying, "All roads lead to Rome") : my current reading is about the Great Depression in Kansas (I am dismayed at the lack of primary sources from this time period), and this came to fruition because a) I'm unemployed partially because there's a freaking depression happening right now and b) I'm all about sustainability (something that the husband loves to make snide comments about) at the moment. In my mind's eye the Great Depression was the height of American sustainability efforts (and rightly so considering the environmental impacts that the all-out capitalism of post-WWI wrought), and once WWII had passed the country somehow stopped with the victory gardens and the desire to make everything stretch as far as possible. I've often wondered why or how that change took place; of course, when speaking of history it's nigh impossible to pin-point a moment in time and say "Here. Right here. This is when the paradigm shifted."
However, today I came across an interesting tidbit that got the ol' brain wheels a-turnin': it was a comment about how the "American Dream" changed from the desire to be self-sufficient to the desire to have wealth. And it's true - we've gone so far away from Jeffersonian democracy that I ask myself if this great experiment that we call American democracy has failed. I don't think it has, but it feels as though lately it has been on the brink of failure. Maybe that's just the national social anxiety of the times leaking out. I read an op-ed in the NY Times today by Friedman that was basically along these lines - that we're no longer concerned about our freedoms (and I mean this in a Lockean sense) and we're more concerned about the Almight Dollar and what status we can buy with it. Not everyone is like this, thank goodness, but the crux of our culture is definitely centered upon it. I'm hoping that this sudden down-turn in our currency's buying power will remind us of the bigger things in life and help us regain some of our lost freedoms.
Anyway, all of this nonsense stems from my desire to be a homesteader (I am obsessed with the nineteenth century like whoa) and to ween me and my husband off of the grid, at least as much as we immediately can. This entails me making as much as I can from scratch and remembering how to do things with my hands - knitting, building stuff, being crafty. All of this not only satisfies my desire to "get back to the basics" but there's also an economical force to it: we're saving money. Why go out for pizza when I can make it at home for a fraction of the price and circumvent all those arguments about what toppings we should get? Granted it takes about an hour to make a pizza (mainly because I make the crust from scratch which means the dough needs time to rise) and by the end of it my arms are sore because of all the kneading (yay, burning calories!), but it is still a lot better for us - both for our wallets and waists - to go this route. Plus, it gives me satisfaction where by all means I should be in a self-pity mess like I was the first stint of unemployment (I graduated from college at the worst time in the history of American universities). Nowadays if it wasn't for our constantly rising bills (not that they rise per se, but the number of bills we have to pay has seemed to rise) I would not be enthusiastic at all about going back to the work force. Can I be a stay-at-home mom, minus having children? Please?

Tomorrow, weather permitting, I am going to tear up the little side garden next to my house and get it ready for planting. We'll probably have another freeze or two before spring officially sets in (which makes me so sad; while I was walking to the library today I spotted a group of daffodils by the mortuary (the irony did not escape me) and I wanted to gather them up because I knew they would not survive through the week). At least I have time to plant things; I know the tulips are starting to sprout and that always makes me anxious that I should be planting things or that I should already have things in the ground. I long to farm and yet I have no idea about any of this; hopefully this year I'll be successful at growing something. I can usually get things to sprout and then it all goes awry. I don't know. A friend has some land and asked me if I'll join her in getting that started, and I think the parents are doubling their operation (I have dreams of the eggplants from last summer. Oh, so amazing.) this time around. Another goal this summer is to branch out in the kitchen and use produce that I've never actually used. What is this fennel and kale that you speak of?

I've also been reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" and I wish the library had "Food Not Lawns" on the shelf, but no. Pretty much every book that I've wanted from the library is either check-out or lost, and has at least 3 holds waiting on them. It is times like this that make me wish I still worked in interlibrary loans. I would have this stuff like *that.*

My rabbit is asleep. I've only seen him sleep like, twice. I'm going to take this as a sign that I too should be asleep. Silly crepuscular animals.

La nostra collezione film nell'italiano

A friend of mine asked us what movies we have in Italian (nota: these are American-made movies dubbed in Italian), and so here is our list of movies. All these movies were made possible thanks to the fine people at tntvillage.org. I've also added a link to the imdb.com page for the movies, and have added warnings when possible.

300- Rated R for graphic battle sequences throughout, some sexuality and nudity. This movie was based on Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name, which was about the 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae.
Aladdin- Disney movie.
Alice in Wonderland- Another Disney movie (I looooove Disney movies in Italian)
Anchorman- The Ledend of Ron Burgundy- Rated PG-13 for sexual humor, language and comic violence. I don't know if we have the un-edited copy or not. I thought this movie was sort of dumb.
Bambi- Saddest Disney Movie Ever.
Batman Returns- With Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito as "The Penguin."
Big Fish- This is a nice family movie.
Brazil- This movie is rated R, but I don't know why. There's no nudity or explicit violence in it. It does have a very "1984" feel to it, though.
Donnie Darko- People around my age group (20-26 years old) seem to really like this movie.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas- "Non possiamo fermarci! Ci sono i pipistrelli!"
Fight Club- This has a lot of blood and violence in it.
The 40 Year-old Virgin- I have not seen this movie all the way through. It does have adult themes in it (as the title would suggest).
Interview with a Vampire- Mi piace questo film, ma mi piacciono i vampiri.
Lion King- This is actually the remastered movie, so it contains an extra song. That extra song makes me angry.
Lord of War- This is a political-y movie about an arms dealer. I thought it was pretty good.
The Nightmare Before Christmas- In the Italian version, Jack's singing is done by Italian superstar Renato Zero. It's so good.
Pulp Fiction- Rated R for strong graphic violence and drug use, pervasive strong language and some sexuality.
Resident Evil- I haven't seen this one yet, in Italian or English.
Se7en- This is a thriller about a serial killer who kills his victims based on the 7 Deadly Sins. It's very graphic at times.
Sin City- Unfortunately, we cannot get the sound right on this movie. You can hear some people talk, but not most of them.
V for Vendetta- Rated R for strong violence and some language.

Movies that we have that were made in Italy (these are mainly recent Italian releases):

Amnesia- I haven't seen this one yet, but it's by the same director of "Io non ho paura"
La gabbianella e il gatto- This was the most expensive animated film ever made. I have not seen it since my 1st year in Italian, and even though it was a children's movie it was hard to follow. I should watch it again since I have 2 more years under my belt.
Notte prima degli esami- This is a "teen movie," but unlike America, in Italy teen movies include excessive nudity. This had a lot of fanfare when it was released in Italy; personally, I was unimpressed.
Notte prima degli esami oggi- This is the sequal to "Notte prima degli esami." The first one is set in the 80's, so this one is set in 2007 but they kept the same actors from the last movie. Yeah. Confusing and dumb. More nudity than the first.

We're always getting more movies as time progresses. I interlibrary loaned some more recent (last 5 years) Italian releases (these ARE Italian movies) that should be here in these next few weeks. I also watch a lot of older Italian films. Woo.

Una nota con più stile

Soooo...J. Ax released a single with another band from Milano called "The Styles." The Styles sound awesome, but unfortunately all their songs are in English. This was rather confusing for me, since their website was sprinkled with both languages and I didn't know if this was because the Internet was messing with my mind or what.
Anyway, I like the song.
EDIT: This video is not the best quality. I had a better one, but by the time I get them up and translated, youtube has already deleted the video. Argh! I need to find another way to put songs on here without relying on youtube (it is possible) but I'm too lazy when it comes to technology.

But I have one stylist that watches in order to understand me

I'm having problems with this one. First, I'm not too sure if "c'ha" is "ci ha" or something else (Italian pronouns still trip me up) and "cavalli" could mean "horses," "knights," or "crotches (as in pant crotches)." And is the "ha" referring to the "stilista" in the previous line or what? Also, "investire?" "I have nothing to" ...to what? I have nothing to invest? I have nothing to attack? I have nothing to run into?

I know this first half is some sort of pun, since "cavallo dei canzoni" means "privates/crotch." The second half probably says "My crotch has more style."

Something something the villa I must go crazy (althought I like "I must freak out" better, but I am a kind of person that freaks out).

The house in Circonvalla (which I am guessing is a suburb of Milan?), but it has more style

ho la casa disegnata, da bombole spray
I have the house designed, (from cynlinder spray? I've heard J. Ax use "bombole" in another song, so it could be slang for something.)

Padre Padrone ed i fratelli Taviani

Let it be known that I watch an exceptional amount of Italian movies, mainly because they help me with my listening comprehension and I would like to think that I am learning about Italian culture through them. Last night I finally watched "Padre padrone" by the Taviani brothers, Paolo and Vittorio. This is the second Taviani movie I have seen, the first one being "La notte di San Lorenzo" (English title: The Night of the Shooting Stars).
I did not like "Padre padrone" that much, although I'm certain there are some things in it that I didn't understand due to the fact that I'm American. The movie is mainly about an overbearing father and his eldest son, Galvino, and the father's desire to make Galvino into a shepherd, even if Galvino detests the life. It bothers me to think that this is a realistic look at life in rural Italy (at least in the 1970's), since the first half of the movie was Galvino being beaten fairly consistently by his father; however, once Galvino became a man some fantastic changes happen in his life and he eventually rises from being an uneducated, poor man to a well-respected scholar.
I thought the premise for this movie was very hard to watch at times, but stylistically I enjoyed it. The Taviani Brothers know how to use the camera to alter the mood of the movie, jumping back and forth between points of view. There was also some wonderful music in this movie, although there were times when I thought the music was inappropriate for the scene (or visa versa). I would not recommend this movie to other students of Italian due to its coarse view and troubling themes, but for the Italian-movie buff, I think it is well worth the watch.

I've been working on some more translations, but the songs are so long and when I run into words that are not in any of my dictionaries (ho cinque dizionari!) I become upset and stop for a while. Then there's the fact that I'm translating multiple things at a time, which extends the time of completion. I've also been distracted with Star Wars (the movies, the Lego game for the Wii), work, and the fact that school starts in a week. I bought most of my books today: under $200 for the semester for the both of us. In fact, Anthony does not have to buy anything for this round: all the classes he's in I have already had, and I never resell my books.

Maybe in the future I'll write a completely Italian post (it's in my capacity to do so), but I'm really tired today. Forgive me, my imaginary readers!

osessione

Because I have totally dropped out of pop culture (più o meno), my musical tastes seem to peak in 1998 and dwindle from there. With Italian music it is even worse, since it is almost impossible for me to keep up with it in a timely manner. Needless to say, my current obsession in Italian music (or in general) peaked in 2002 with their release of Domani Smetto, although they have been around since the early 90's.

Let me first say: I have a huge crush on Articolo 31's leadman, J.Ax. It's crushes like these that make me question in my taste in men, since J.Ax had been sporting a similiar hairstyle to Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSync for awhile. However, the argument can be made that Italians can make anything look incredibly sexy, and in fact they strive to do so.

The first of many songs of Articolo 31's that I will post is the title song from Domani Smetto. It should be said right now that I don't have a good translation for the title: domani is 'tomorrow' and smetto means 'stopped,' 'ceased,' 'quit,' and 'give up.' So something like "tomorrow stopped" is probably a close approximation.
Anyway:

EDIT: This video is fubar at times, probably to escape the censors, but more likely the person is an idiot. Sorry. Blame MTV.

They used to tell me- about being quiet and good

Loro mi dicevano - tranquillo e cambia tono
They used to tell me- calm down and change your tone

Letizia
They used to tell me- about not talking with your mouth full and walking upright with good posture, about not going away from the point and following the pattern or going to bed without dinner, about not creating a problem that is not worthwhile, about being thankful to be born on the side of the world that in the bottom of the heart is perfect…perfect…perfect..perfect like you, Letizia.

It is a characteristic expression of vocalism and of prettiness of the song to Italy.

I don’t know well when it starts – at a sign I don’t follow anymore—dear, it is like how you say, really.

I don’t know what I ruined- it is that I proceed to say too much no maybe it is for this reason that you left me- and I will not even suffer here a little.

But it saddens me for now not believing it is a perfect world- tomorrow stopped is better if warned tomorrow (?)

Loro mi dicevano - di stare sui binari
They told me- about staying on track

Loro mi dicevano - rispetta questi orari
They told me- respect these schedules

They told me- keep your feet on the ground

Loro mi dicevano - è giusta questa guerra
They told me- this war is just

It saddens me for now not believing in a perfect world- tomorrow stopped I had left again on the toilet seat- tomorrow stopped and I made too many trips without tickets- tomorrow stopped is better if warned tomorrow (? Again)

Loro mi dicevano - non calpestare l'erba
They told me- don’t step on the grass

Loro mi dicevano - non coltivare l'erba
They told me- don’t grow weed

They told me- how to wear clothes- and my hair was either too long or too short

And don’t wear the sanctioned crash helmet- don’t go on a diet my identity I made after eating in the bathroom- and I am still completely soaked

It saddens me for now not believing in a perfect world- tomorrow stopped I had left again on the toilet seat- tomorrow stopped and I made too many trips without tickets- tomorrow stopped is better if warned tomorrow (? Again)

La prima posta!

Okay!
Now that I have made this blog I don't really know what I am going to do with it. As the URL suggests, this is an official "Team Whaley" blog, but there's really nothing in the Team Whaley world right now that is worth exploring. Mio marito wanted me to start posting the Italian-to-English song lyrics that I have been half-heartedly posting in other places, and since I did not want to create a new lj account for this (toggling back and forth would be a pain), I'll put it here for now.
So stick around if you're into Italian music and such (I'll probably be posting stuff in Italian too). If not, then...well...non me ne frega niente!
